The dog and I are in Colorado Springs for a few days to visit friends. 10 years ago, I was a member of the El Paso County Search and Rescue Team. I had dinner with a few friends when I got into town. Got to visit Rescue Base last night. I was supposed to spend the morning training with Kim and Brenda and their dogs — hiding, observing. At least that is what I thought I was supposed to be doing…

Technorati Tags: PublicService

As we were getting started, Kim received a search page for an elderly man visiting his son in Falcon, and had not returned for two days. He left shortly before a snow storm blew through town. Kim and Brenda invited me to tag along (and I think to put me to work). We when to the home of the reporting party. I said would wait in the car with my dog, they would come out and we’d start a road search.

Not quite… Since I had been a member and was invited into the home. A short time later, I was placed in front of the radios passing traffic to the Aviation Division. Observing, asking questions, passing tasking assignments to the two aircraft we eventually got airborne and relaying their observations to the management team. This was not the vacation I envisioned.

We were going all day and reaching the end of any useful searching, and losing daylight, wondering what we would do next when we received a call from Elbert County that he had been found. Seeing the reaction reminded me of what made the work so worthwhile.

I’m thankful to Kim and Brenda for letting me tag along and to the rest of the team for letting me participate. It brought back a lot of good memories.

I arrived in Grand Rapids last night, a day early. This was because Acton wanted us to be at the Airport by 3:00pm. The earliest flight got in at 8:30pm, hence the early arrival. When I got in, I posted the entries I wrote in transit, caught the latest podcasts, and went to bed.

Here’s my first post from the Day’s Inn in Grand Rapids. We start the Acton Institute program tonight. There are at least four other people from Talbot here.

I’m sharing a room with a recent graduate from Princeton who used to work for Robert P. George.

I’m in Atlanta. With the delay my four hour layover became a three hour layover. Not much to report here. Had a nice long walk hunting down a restaurant. Ended up at Sbrarro’s *Mmmmmm… Grease…” And there there really is an iPod vending machine.

Looks like we have been delayed for an hour and a half. The airport broke their standard tow bar to push the 757 back. The pilot said that it looked like the Indy 500, but from what I recall, the ordered chaos in the pit actually accomplishes something.

We are in the air now.

Saw some interesting sites on take off. The Iwerks building is rignt next to the airport.

The in-flight movie is “Robots” I’ve got my iPod. I’m listening to Wil WRight talk about the development of game software. He recalls a few I remember from the early days of computing, “Flight Simulator” by Bruce Artwick and Bill Budge’s Pinball. I remember the wireframe flight simulator. I remember trying to fly off the edge of the “world” and finding that the simulated is round. Fly in a straight line in any direction, and you eventually return to where you started. Then if you were able to fly sraight up, long enough, you would probably find yourself below the ground. An interesting geometry for the universe.
